Supercaps used in Powerbox 2.5kW UPS

S-Cap Boost is intended for industrial and medical applications, offering “a solution to equipment manufacturers requiring high energy peaks for short periods or emergency back-up purposes in applications where, due to safety regulations, lithium ion or acid batteries are not allowed”, said the firm, explaining: “critical applications operating in hostile or confined environments are strictly regulated in terms of chemical and other hazardous risks, reducing or forbidding certain type of batteries. For safety reasons, those applications must have a power backup long enough to run alarms and safety shutdown processes.”

The 2U example, the 29F-54V-60A, integrates 22 supercaps and can deliver full power for 5s or half power for 30s.

To optimise charging, there is an internal dc-dc converter with active cell charge and discharge balancing, cell health monitoring and alarms for high cell voltage, low cell voltage, zero cell voltage and temperature – with digital control and monitoring an alternative option.

The firm is offering capacities from a few farads to 200F for general applications, but up to container size for large systems. The capacitors can sustain from 500,000 to 20,000,000 cycles, “making that technology relevant for applications requiring large amounts of charge /discharge cycles with high energy, such as industrial or medical lasers, electric motor booster or X-ray emission elements.
