Functional safety position sensor has two devices in one package

Functional safety position sensor has two devices in one package - AMS-AS5200L dual-magnetic-rotation-sensor

Called AS5200L, it can provide its angle measurements via the I2C interface or as a PWM signal.

AEC-Q100 grade 1 qualified, the die within the package are stacked. “The stacked configuration of the die means they may be paired with a single small target magnet while providing identical measurement outputs from each die,” said its maker, AMS. “Separate package pins are provided for each die to prevent an electrical fault in the device from affecting both die.”

The package is 5 x 5mm MLF-16, with exposed pads and wettable flanks for board-level solder joint inspection.

Inherently resistant to stray magnetic fields, according to the firm, it produces accurate and repeatable measurements even in noisy magnetic environments.

Active and stand-by modes are available, with a smart low-power mode automatically reducing consumption to 1.5mA average when polling every 100ms.

Measurement is over a full 0° to 360° rotation by default, or a smaller range my be set by programming a start and stop position into the chip’s one-time programmable (OTP) memory.

“The AS5200L is perfect for embedded safety-critical automotive applications in which high accuracy, redundancy and a very small footprint are of high priority,” said AMS marketing director Thomas Mueller. “With its performance and redundancy, it can help automotive OEMs achieve up to ASIL D compliance at the system level.”
